The Dalai lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet since it was invaded by the Chinese it was no longer safe for him to live there and still practice his religion. He now travels the world trying to secure freedom for his country.
The Dalai Lama escaped persecution when China invaded his country, annexing it permanently. His followers begged him to go into exile in a safe country.
Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, currently lives in Dharamsala, India. Dharamsala has been the headquarters of the Central Tibetan Administration and the spiritual hub of Tibetan Buddhism in exile since the Dalai Lama fled from Tibet in 1959.
The 14th Dalai Lama is the current Dalai Lama. He was born in 1935 and he is still alive.
At the age of two, Tenzin Gyatso was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. Thirteen years later, in 1950, he was enthroned as the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. The Nechung Oracle was his oracle, and the official state oracle for Tibet. The Nechung Oracle had predicted that the 14th Dalai Lama would lose his country. He also predicted that the Dalai Lama would lose his life if he didn't leave in 1959. For that year, there was an attempt to end nine years of Chinese occupation. The uprising failed, and the Chinese eliminated the resistance movement. Though himself a Hindu, Indian Prime Minister Nehru let the Dalai Lama set up a government-in-exile just across the Tibet-India border, in Dharmsala. For Dharmsala already had an established Tibetan community, and established Buddhist monasteries. It has been predicted that if the Dalai Lama lives to be 100, he will get his country back.
The Dalai Lama no longer lives in Tibet due to the Chinese government's control over the region following the 1950 invasion. In 1959, he fled to India after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, where he was granted asylum. Since then, he has established the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamshala, India, and continues to advocate for Tibetan rights and autonomy from abroad.
