There are many traditions of nuns in Hinduism. The most prominent is the Ramakrishna tradition for nuns and the organisation is called Sarada Math at Dakshineshwar, Kolkata, India. Under Sarada Math, there are many branch centres in India and also in SriLanka and Australia. Ramakrishna Order in western countries are known as Vedanta Centres. Under the Vedanta Centres in Los Angeles and San Francisco, there are nunneries. Any Hindu unmarried girl or any unmarried girl who is willing to accept Vedantic traditions as taught by Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886) and as lived by Sarada Devi (1853-1920) and as preached by Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) can join Sarada Math with certain conditions like age limits and educational qualifications. After an initial training of 4 years, they will be initiated to the Order as Celibates (brahmacharinis) with an unbroken vow of celibacy. This is the first vow. The final vow of sannyasa will be ordained after another six years. There are other similar organisations under Ramakrishna tradition. Sri Saradeshwari Ashrama at 26, Gauri Mata Sarani, Kolkata is the first women monastic organisation, which was founded in 1895. They also admit Hindu girls to become nuns. Sri Sarada Ashrama at Sri Ramakrishna Nagar at Ottapalam, Kerala state, India is another convent for Hindu girls. There are many such Sarada Ashramas in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in India.
