OpinionThe Bible says that the Flood covered the whole world, at least to the top of the mountain called Ararat in the Old Testament days, which may or may not be the Mount Ararat we know today.

According to the Genesis 7:2, there were 2 of each kind of "unclean" animal, 7 of each type of "clean" animal--those which would be used for sacrifices and for food. None of the 3 pairs were harmed (sacrificed) until they had used up the 7th one of all clean animals for their needs of clothing and food. By then the 3 pair had offspring.

These animals were "after their kinds," e.g. "canine" would have been the kind that became wolves and dogs. Logically, they would have been the young of each kind, requiring far less room and food than adult animals.

Genesis 6:15 indicates that Noah's ark is approximately 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high (assuming a cubit of 18 inches), which is about half as big as the Queen Mary.

It happened in pre-Flood Suruppak near post-Flood Ur just north of Kuwait and pushed the ark up the valley 520 miles to Mount Ararat.

If the story is literally true, anything that did not go onto the Ark must have perished. If it was a worldwide flood, there must have been millions of mammals, marsupials and monotremes: two of each species and each subspecies, plus millions more of birds and reptiles from all over the world, many millions of insects, Spiders, scorpions, parasites and other small creatures. If the story is literally true, anything that did not go onto the Ark must have perished. This includes plant life, so Noah would probably have needed to take billions of seeds, spores and cuttings of all the trees, bushes, grass species, mosses, lichens, fungi and even seaweed.

The Bible says that Noah was commanded to take two of each type of animal (seven of some), but some creationists appear to say that he disobeyed this command, by not taking any of the dinosaurs.
Noah would have taken enough of each type of food to last all the herbivores the period of the Flood and until he had replanted the vegetation in the appropriate places and it had spread sufficiently to feed the animals without his help. In addition, Noah would have taken sufficient food for the carnivores, to last period of the Flood and until the herbivores had reproduced sufficiently to serve as their natural prey.

Although he was not commanded to do so, Noah must have also taken infected animals that would not have survived the voyage, in order to save bacteria and viruses from the Flood. Had he not done so, we would now have a world largely free of disease.

The Flood legend originated in Mesopotamia, with the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. Umapishtim revealed that the gods had been planning to destroy the earth with a flood. One god had taken pity and advised Umapishtim to abandon his possessions, build a seven-tiered ship, and take with him the seed of all creatures. Umapishtim did so, and after seven days, the ark landed on a mountain and he sent forth a dove. Humanity was saved.
