Answer A How to Convert to Islam

From your Islam Guide

If you believe in the teachings of Islam, it is recommended to make a formal declaration of faith. After careful study and prayer, if you find that you want to embrace the faith, here's how:

  1. For a Muslim, every action begins with your intention. Quietly, to yourself, make the intention to embrace Islam as your faith.
  2. Say the following words with clarity of intention, firm faith and belief:
  3. Say: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill Allah." (I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah.) "Wa ash-hadu ann Muhammad an-rasullulallah." (And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.)
  4. Take a shower for whole body, symbolically cleansing yourself of your past life. Then you start your life free from all sins before entering into Islam; as if you are born again.
  5. Learn how to pray and practice Islam in your daily life.
  6. Read about Islam teachings and Islam 5 pillars (see related questions below for more information).
  7. Continue to learn, study, and grow in your new faith.

Tips:

  • Before embracing Islam, be sure to spend time studying the faith, reading books, and learning from other Muslim Aleem/Scholer(Ordinary Muslim may not have enough knowledge).
  • Your conversion should be based on knowledge, certainty, acceptance, submission, truthfulness, and sincerity.
  • It is not required to have Muslim witnesses to your conversion, but many prefer to have such support.
  • If you wish to go for Hajj (pilgrimage), a "certificate of Islam" may be required. Contact your local Islamic center to obtain one.

Answer B

To become a Muslim one must have faith in the religion, go to a mosque, and follow the directions of the instructors there, one of which is saying in Arabic: "There is only one god and Mohammad (PBUH) is his last messenger."

You have to recite the 'dua kalimah syahadah'. It goes like this (I made the words simpler for you to pronounce since you are non-Muslim):

Ashhadu alla illaha illallah

Wa ashhadu ana muhammada rasulullah

Islam, a name given by Allah to this religion (Quran 5:4), is an Arabic word which literally means obedience and peace. ISLAM is derived from the Arabic root "SALEMA": peace, purity, submission and obedience. So 'Islam' would mean the path of those who are obedient to Allah and who establish peace with Him and His creatures. Its follower are called Muslims.

Islam is not a new religion. It is, in essence, the same message and guidance which Allah revealed to all prophets before Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Allah says in the Qur'ân:

"Say, `We believe in ALLAH and that which has been revealed to us, and that which was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and in that which was given to Moses and Jesus and other Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them and to HIM we submit." (Qur'ân 3-85)

Six main Articles of faith in Islam

  • To believe in the Oneness of Allah.
  • To believe in all His Angels.
  • To believe in all His Books.
  • To believe in all His Prophets.
  • To believe in the Day of Resurrection.
  • To believe in the Decree of Allah

The Five Pillars of Islam (Declaration of the Islamic Faith)

In order to enter into the fold of Islam i.e. to be Muslim, one has to know, believe, accept totally and sincerely apply the five basic principles (Pillars) on which Islam is based: Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah - Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said: Islam is based on the following five pillars (principles).

  1. Bearing witness that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah
  2. Observance of Prayer
  3. Paying Zakat
  4. Fasting during Ramadhan
  5. Pilgrimage to the house of Allah.
Answer You take the Shahadah sincerely:

"Ash-hadu anla elaha illa-Allah WA ash-hadu unna muhammaden rasul-Allah"

English:

"I bear witness that there is no deity worthy to be worshiped but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger."

This declaration is one of the core beliefs in Islam.
