I am assuming that what you are asking is how does Buddhism today compare to what the Buddha taught. Buddhism over the years has been enriched by each culture that has been exposed to; changing the nature of practice just slightly each time. So Chan Buddhism (China) is slightly different in practice then is Zen Buddhism (Japan, Korea). But the teachings have always remained the same. Now when I speak of practice, it is the methods used to teach the Dharma (the teachings). The biggest change in Buddhism since the Buddha is the development of Mahayana Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism, to which is the tradition I practice, added teachings from later Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to The Buddha's original teachings in regards to living a compassionate life to help all other beings. So Buddhism adapts the methods but never the message or teachings.

Compare and contrast Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism?

Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism are two major branches of Buddhism that differ in their beliefs and practices. Theravada, often seen as the more conservative tradition, emphasizes individual enlightenment through meditation and adherence to the original teachings of the Buddha, focusing on the Arhat as the ideal practitioner. In contrast, Mahayana Buddhism introduces concepts like the Bodhisattva, who delays enlightenment to help others achieve it, and incorporates a broader range of texts and practices. While both share core Buddhist principles, Mahayana tends to be more inclusive and adaptable, appealing to a wider audience.

What are some bad things about Buddhism?

Hmm, I would have to say that it is not for lazy people. Being a Buddhist takes effort. We practice our religion diligently all day long every day. Since Buddhism is a contemplative religion, we think a lot about what we have done and why and what drives us and then compare this to the Buddha's teachings and adjust ourselves.

What Buddhist beliefs appealed to millions of Chinese peasants?

Buddhism is famous not only to the peasants but also to the rich and famous. http://www.adherents.com/largecom/fam_buddhist.html To answer your question; because it helps the people to know the causes of their sufferings and ways on how to eliminate these causes and therefor eliminate the sufferings. How did the spread of Buddhism in the East compare to the spread of Christianity in the West?

A:Buddhism had its origins in India, but later Muslims and Hindus in India saw Buddhism as a mutual threat, and agreed to destroy the religion, thus few Buddhists can now be found in India or Pakistan. However, Buddhism was more successful elsewhere, spreading west through Afghanistan, east as far as Japan, and eventually into south-east Asia. By and large, both Buddhism and Nestorian Christianity spread peacefully as they moved through Asia, in stark contrast to Christianity in the West, once it became the religion of the Roman Empire. Both Christianity and Buddhism became established in China, but Christianity did not survive there, with Buddhism becoming the dominant religion, alongside Daoism and Confucianism.Philip Jenkins (The Lost History of Christianity) reports that in 782, the Indian Buddhist missionary Prajna arrived in the Chinese imperial capital, Chang'an, but was unable to translate the Sanskrit sutras he had brought with him into either Chinese or any other familiar tongue. He duly consulted a Nestorian bishop, and Buddhist and Nestorian scholars worked amiably together for some years to translate seven copious volumes of Buddhist wisdom into the Chinese language.Like all religions, Buddhism evolved over time, particularly under the influence of Tibetan and Chinese traditional beliefs. In Vietnam, a curious syncretistic faith known as Caodaism, combining Catholic, Buddhist and Daoist beliefs, developed and won a following in the 1920s. It was granted legal recognition in 1997.

How does Buddhism contradict Christianity?

No, Buddhism does not have stance for or against the existence of God. That question is left to the practitioner. Many religious figures from both traditions have studied the "other side". For instance, Thomas Merton a Catholic Monk practiced Zen Buddhism while also writing a few texts such as "Zen and the Birds Appetite" or The Buddhist Monk Thich Nah Han's "Living Buddha Living Christ". More input Buddhism is not against Christianity, but they do not share ideas. Examples: Buddhists believe in reincarnation, but Christians believe in afterlife after one death. Christians believe in Jesus Christ as a saviour, but Buddhists believe in no divine beings. Buddhists believe in karma, but Christians don't believe in punishments from actions.

Is there really some thing like heaven or hell in Buddhism?

Buddhism does not limit itself to this Earth as the only place to be reborn to. There are pleasant places to be reborn into which compare favourably to the Abrahamic religion's heavens and unpleasant worlds which compare to the Abrahamic religion's hells. Both there types of world ultimately become as unsatisfactory as an Earthly existence. With enlightenment there is the opportunity to enter into Nirvana where the ultimate self deception, that of a self separate from the rest of the universal experience is (or can be) given up. In the Abrahamic religions the individual supposedly maintains the sense of self in heaven or hell. so that the Buddhist's Nirvana is unlike those faiths' concept of heaven or hell.

What is a unique feature of Buddhism?

Buddhism is unique because it is not really a religion it is a teahing, a way of life. Also to add to whats above, You are not to follow Buddhism like a blind man but question and compare things to your own experiences. Answer: WHEN SOMEONE SAYS, 'I'M A BUDDHIST' ● Do not conclude that the person's beliefs are the same as those of all other Buddhists. Buddhist teachings are vague and the interpretation varies from one person to another. Japanese Buddhism is quite different from the Buddhism of Southeast Asia. Individuals, too, differ as to their viewpoint. In general, however, the following points may be helpful: (1) Buddhism does not recognize an external God, a personal Creator. But many Buddhists worship images and relics of Buddha. (2) Siddhartha Gautama, who was given the title Buddha, came to be viewed as the religious ideal of his followers, to be imitated by them. He encouraged gaining enlightenment by studying mankind from a human standpoint, also severing the roots of suffering by controlling the mind so as to eliminate all earthly desire. He taught that in this way one might attain to Nirvana, free from the rebirths of transmigration. (3) Buddhists worship their ancestors, because they view these as the source of their life.
