The first Muslims to arrive in Africa did so during Muhammed's lifetime, and their purpose was universal conversion and/or conquest in the name of both Allah (the Muslim name for God) and Muhammed. They perceived all religions other than Islam to be false. Anyone who did not submit to Allah willingly was threatened with death or killed outright. This was a very convincing way to spread their religion, and it was highly successful.
The majority of Africans are adherents of Christianity or Islam. African people often combine the practice of their traditional belief with the practice of Abrahamic religions. Abrahamic religions are widespread throughout Africa. They have both spread and replaced indigenous African religions, but are often adapted to African cultural contexts and belief systems. It was estimated in 2002 that Muslims form 45% of Africa's population, while Christians forming 40. Refer to link below for detailed information.
