Christians believe the Bible as the inspired word of God. The biblical teaching regarding salvation is vastly different from any religious teaching, and to understand how it is different, one needs to first understand why is there a need for salvation in the first place. The Bible teaches that man (Adam) was created perfect, pure, immortal and as the image and likeness of God, to live in the presence of God and have dominion over all creation. If we only look at ourselves and look around us, it doesn't take long to realize that we are long ways from paradise. That is because Adam had disobeyed God and so brought sin and death. "By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" (Romans 5:12) But sin is more than mere actions, it is a part of human nature, as David wrote - "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me." (Psalm 51:5) Adam and Eve felt naked (ashamed) after they had sinned, that's why do we all feel ashamed without clothes, because we are all sinners - before we even do anything wrong we are wrong by nature. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9) The man in such condition is too far gone for religion, everything he does is tainted by sin - "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses [good deed] are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away" (Isaiah 64:6) How then can we cleanse our hearts of every selfish and impure desire, cleanse our minds of all sinful thoughts?

Paul, in his letter to the Ephesian church wrote "God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast."(Ephesians 2:4-9) This is probably the clearest illustration on the "Christian concept of salvation", first of being "dead in sins" and then "quickened [made alive] together with Christ" And also as Jesus Christ has said "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." (John 5:24) The very term salvation implies that is not merely guidance, instruction or help but rescue, deliverance of one who is helpless and cannot do anything to save himself, one who is lost and cannot find the way, every Christian will openly confess that such was our condition, and we own no credit for our salvation but give all glory to God.
