A:

Acts 2:41 says that three thousand people were baptised after the speech that Peter gave at Pentecost.

When we add to this the five thousand converts on just one other occasion, at Acts 4:4,we should assume that within a short period of time a large proportion of the entire population of around 40,000 in Jerusalem was Christian, in spite of the evidence to the contrary. Uta Ranke-Heinemann (Putting Away Childish Things) says that the whole of Acts of the Apostlesis a work of Propaganda aimed at Gentile Christians and Gentiles who have not yet become Christians. If Peter did actually give a speech at Pentecost, we should assume few people were really baptised on that occasion.
