In what area of the world is atheism practiced?

Think of it this way- not playing Golf is not a different sport. Following that example, atheism is a lack of religion and not a different religion.

The top ten countries with people who viewed themselves as "convinced atheists" were China (47%), Japan (31%), the Czech Republic (30%), France (29%), South Korea (15%), Germany (15%), Netherlands (14%), Austria (10%), Iceland (10%), Australia (10%) and the Republic of Ireland (10%).

Atheism is not practiced. That implies a structured set of beliefs, practices, meetings and texts. Atheism is simply not having a way of running one's life without acceptance of the existence of a deity. It is an individual thing. Many countries because of their education levels have many people who meet this criteria (Europe). Other countries have banned religion which is not the same as having a population that does not believe in a God (the old Soviet Union and China). Some countries assign their population a religion for census purposed (Japan) based on the family's past practices.Some countries have religions such as Buddhism that do not require adherents to identify a deity for their practice. As consequence there is to definitive data for countries with a high number of atheists. A best guess would be those countries wit a highly educated population, countries which espouse seular government and countries with a high tolerance of individual opinion.
