There are two Monarchs known for trying to return England to Catholicism, Queen Mary I, who did bring the Church of England back into the Catholic Church, and King James II & VII who opened talks with the Pope to bring the Church of England back into the Catholic Church before he was over thrown in the Glorious Revolution. Also John Henry Cardinal Newman converted to Catholicism in the nineteenth century and did a wonderful job of explaining Catholicism to Anglicans.
Archbishop Laud tried to end Puritan ideas in the Church of England because he believed they threatened the authority and unity of the church. He sought to enforce uniformity in worship and discipline to maintain control over religious practices within the church. Laud's efforts ultimately contributed to increasing tensions that led to the English Civil War.

The answer is this: Religious freedom. When king Henry the 8th separated from the catholic church in the 1500s, he created the church of England. In the 1600s, members of the church of England decided that the church was too much like the catholic church, and tried to leave it. however, it was against the law in England to go against the church, and those people who chose to leave the church had to flee from their homes, or face persecution. So many fled to the American colonies for religious freedom.

The Massachusets colony was founded first by the Pilgrims, who were Puritans (and Separatists). Puritans were a movement within the Church of England (Anglican) that favored a more Reformed theology and felt that the English reformation did not go far enough - that the Anglicans were still too similar to the Catholic Church. While Puritans tried to push these reforms from within the Church of England, Separatists felt there was no room left for them there. Starting in 1630, these groups started migrating heavily to Massachusets.
Mary I changed the English church by restoring Catholicism as the official religion. She undid many of the religious reforms made by her father, Henry VIII, and her brother, Edward VI, and sought to return England to the authority of the Pope. She persecuted Protestants, leading to hundreds of executions and earning her the nickname "Bloody Mary."
