What are the Commandments of Buddhism?

There aren't exactly commandments in Buddhism, as Buddhism is a voluntary path. However, the Buddha did give the Five Noble Precepts, which are the mark of a practicing Buddhist.

1. Not killing
2. Not stealing
3. Abstaining from sexual misconduct (i.e. adultery)
4. Not lying
5. Not drinking alcohol

Oh! Well... there're kinda 10 rules in Buddhism, but they're for MONKS, not for civilians.

1. Do not destroy life.
2. Do not take what is not given you.
3. Do not commit adultery.
4. Tell no lies and deceive no one.
5. Do not become intoxicated.
6. Eat temperately and not at all in the afternoons.
7. Do not watch dancing, nor listen to singing or plays.
8. Wear no garlands, perfumes or any adornments.
9. Sleep not in luxurious beds.
10. Accept no gold or silver.

I hope I can be of some help.

Many different schools of Buddhism have emerged sine the Buddha planted the seed of the practice 2500 years ago. I follow the Zen school of Buddhism so my answer is from that perspective.

Basically there are no commandments in Buddhism. The Buddha was an ordinary man who woke up to, and saw the nature of reality, all human beings can achieve Buddhahood.

Buddhism is a set of practice designed to liberate the individual from suffering. It does not strictly speaking have an opinion on God or metaphysics, although it doesn't rule it out it is simply irrelevant to the goals of Buddhist practice.

Buddhism is more of a dialogue more similar to a form of psychotherapy than a religion.

Buddha described the practice (Dharma) as like a boat to cross a river, when we have no further use for it let it go. Don't cling on to anything, even Buddhist teachings.

The basic ideas that the buddha formulated are the four noble truths and the eight fold path.

1. Life is characterized by suffering or unhappiness.

2. Suffering is caused by clinging onto ideas and things that are always themselves changing.

3. People can reduce and end their suffering.

4. The method is the eightfold path.

The eightfold path is a set of techniques to develop Wisdom, Ethical Conduct and Mental Development, abbreviated to;

1. Right View

2. Right Intention

3. Right Speech

4. Right Action

5. Right Livelihood

6. Right Effort

7. Right Mindfulness.

8. Right Concentration.

These are ways to reduce our suffering rather than commandments to be obeyed.

Different schools of Buddhism have developed different techniques to achieve them.

Buddhism is about meeting reality as it is without flinching or hiding or making up comforting stories. No two Buddhists will have the same view point because it is based in your own experience of your life. By seeing through our delusions we will have an experience of true nature which is free flowing and without boundaries.

Buddhas final words were;

Be a light unto yourself, do not take refuge in any external thing, hold fast to the truth and do not take refuge in anything but yourself.

Buddhism doesn't have ten commandments or any for that matter. Its principles are not based on command and control but on suggestions on how to lead one's life more skillfully to avoid pain and suffering of all types. The Eightfold Path is a numerical list of these suggestions but a Buddhist is not required to live by them.

Buddhism has no commandments it has suggestions for living a more skillful life called the Eightfold Path. Commandments are generally given by a god. Buddhism does not have a god. The god then "judges" people on how well they comply with the commandments and uses this test to condemn them to heaven or hell. Buddhism has no god to do this or a heaven or hell to go to, or a life death dichotomy (one kick at the cat) Buddhism as an individual process to learn to live a proper life over countless cycles of death and rebirth until enlightenment is attained.
