Catholic Answer:
Normally the pope would reside in the Papal Apartments of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The Palace, itself, is lavishly decorated with great artworks as well it should be. It is the Vatican equivalent of Buckingham Palace or the White House. It is here that the Holy Father meets with religious and political leaders from around the world. The actual Papal Apartments, however, are rather spartan and utilitarian. Pope Francis has decided to live in an even smaller apartment in the Casa Santa Marta, a guest house where clergy with business in the Vatican stay during visits and where the cardinals live during a conclave. He is the first pope in about 100 years who has not chosen to live in the Papal Apartments. His apartment might rank as a room in a 2 star hotel with a 5 star being the best. The apartment is clean and comfortable but far from lavish. One needs to remember that, unlike his predecessors, Francis is a member of a religious order (Jesuit) who took a vow of poverty. As Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires he also chose to live in a small apartment and not in the Bishop's residence. For an image of the bedroom of Pope Francis click here.

There is nothing to prevent a pope from owning a home before he is elected. However, unless that home is in the Vatican, he will have to abandon it when he becomes pope and move to the Vatican, the traditional home of the popes.

The Holy Father wears a white cassock with a white cincture, and a white shoulder cape. Some popes have been known to wear red shoes, which dates back centuries, Pope Benedict XVI wore them, Pope Francis does not. Popes also wear a white zucchetto. See photo attached below.
