Tried to conquer Western Europe. Twice it got rather close to Vienna, but did not succeed. Toward the end of the 17th century the empire got too big to control, and there were too many Christian subjects in it, so it began to decline. The Turkish threat came to an end in 1683, when they besieged Vienna (unsuccessfully) for the last time. In 1686, an international army led by Eugen of Savoy took Buda (capital of Hungary) from the Turks. In 1699, they lost Hungary (inc.Croatia and Transylvania) to Austria. However, they kept the Balkans until 1918.
