Not possible to explain the difference between Muslims and non Muslims, because "non Muslims" includes a wide range of religions! but It is possible to explain: what is Islam, and what are the main beliefs of Muslims, hopefully it will answer a part of your question.

Islam: the word ISLAM is an Arabic word, it's literal meaning is SUBMISSION. This represents the submission and adherence to the commands of Allah without objection, which is obtained by obeying Allah and observing his command. Thus Muslims would be in harmony with the universe, for everything in this universe abides by Allah's commands.

The Pillars of Faith in Islam:
1- Muslims believe in one god supreme and eternal, infinite and mighty, merciful and compassionate, the creator and provider, he does not beget nor was he begotten, and there is non equal or comparable to him.
2- Muslims believe in Angels.
3- Muslims believe in ALL the original scriptures.
4- Muslims believe in ALL Messengers of Allah, without discrimination among them.
5- Muslims believe in the day of Judgment.
6- Muslims believe in destination, whether good or bad.

The Pillars of Islam:
1- Declaration of Faith: There no god but Allah and that Mohammed is his messenger to all humanity.
2- Prayers: we have 5 prayers a-day.
3- Fasting the month of Ramadan.
4- Monetary Charity (Zakat): it is an annual payment of 2.5% of net savings that will be given to the poor.
5- Pilgrimage to Makkah.

You got now a brief idea about Muslims. In light of this brief idea you can recognize the difference between Muslims and non Muslims.
