The Five Pillars of Islam are five responsibilities or duties that each Muslim is expected to perform or abide by - rather like the Ten Commandments in Christianity and 613 Mitzvot in Judaism.

The first - Shahada - commands the Muslim to accept Allah as the only god, and Mohammed as His prophet. The second - Salat - is an instruction to pray five times daily at given times. The third - Zakat, similar to Jewish chesed - states that all Muslims must donate to charitable causes with a minimum of 2.5% of one's income given to the poor. The fourth - Sawm - is the obligation to fast during Ramadan. The fifth - Hajj - is the commandment that every able-bodied Muslim makes at least one pilgrimage to Mecca during his or her lifetime.
