It depends on how you define Folk- are you speaking of folk songs modified into hymnal context- this was popular in the late sixties and early seventies. Or are you referring to popular ( of the people- Folk- Volks-- like say Volkswagen-people"s wagon, lit.) practices which may or may not be really in line with church teachings. There has been some divergence with various ethnical groups. The Spanish tend to exaggerate the role of Saint Mary and this goes far beyond normal devotional practices. De Facto they value Mary almost above Christ, and the popular oath ( madre De Dios!) is indicative of this. There are various apparitions statues, etc such as El Caridad del Cobre- literally the Charity of Copper- which is a sort of Madonna but it is adapted to some Island culture- in some cases this stuff verges on multiple personality stuff- such as OUr Lady od Guadeloupe who is entirely different than El Caridad Del Cobre. Semi-literate types seem to go for this graphic presentation, but it makes little sense theologically. True- we had the Transfiguration, and even that is a (difficult topic) Theologians try to Dodge.
