Religions with a creation story often claim to be the oldest, since the world began with that creation and with the god or gods of that religion. More objectively, we can say that animism would be the oldest known type of religion. Shamanism is also very ancient. Because animism and shamanism tend to be found in under-developed societies that are targetted by proselytising religions, there are few followers of pure animism and shamanism today.

Hinduism, Zoroastrianism and Shinto are all very ancient religions. Apparently somewhat less ancient are Judaism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism.

Hinduism, essentially paganism, is the oldest "major religion" in the world and is at least 10,000 years old - probably far older. Hinduism is polytheistic (many gods) which is a trait it shares with all the ancient religions that existed before monotheistic (one god) religions.

Other polytheistic religions equally as ancient as Hinduism and with similar roots would include Shinto in Japan, Huaca in Peru and Bolivia, Böd in Tibet, and many polytheistic or animistic (animal worshipping) religions found in sub-Saharan Africa, the Amazon basin and Melanesia (Papua New Guinea, Samoa etc).

Some ancient polytheistic religions have been recreated and incorporate aspects of ancient religions, these include Æsatru (Norse paganism), Wicca (English witchcraft) and Voudou (or Voodoo).
