There were different sects of Jews; the New Testament mentions Pharisees, Saducees; I'm sure there were more. There were Samaritans, and The Bible also mentions Gentiles; those would be people whose faith may have caused them to worship idols, or more than one god. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believe that they are practicing the same religion that is found in the Bible. So, according to Mormons, those named in the Bible were the first people to practice Mormonism. Mormons believe that this Biblical religion stopped being practiced in about 100 AD in the old world and 300 AD in the new world. In modern times, the religion was restored by Joseph Smith in the 1830's. When the Mormon Church was officially founded on April 6, 1830, there were already 30 members. So, collectively, these 30 people were the first to practice the religion in modern times.
