Answer
Arabian society was tribal, even in the larger cities. When Muhammad retreated to Medina, he became a tribal leader and, by means of judicious inter-tribal marriages, soon became the most prominent leader in Medina.

Many tribal leaders supported their followers with the proceeds of brigandry, attacking caravans for the spoils, although there were codes of honour, including that you never attacked the caravans of friends and allies. In a tribal society, a successful leader is respected and has great influence over his followers. Muhammad soon developed a reputation as a successful brigand, attacking caravans travelling to nearby Mecca.

Three of the Medina tribes had converted to Judaism. The two largest rebelled against Muhammad, who was able to put them down. He soon developed a reputation thoughout the Arabian Peninsula as a successful leader. By attracting followers over a wide area, he was able to spread the new faith, Islam.
