Elizabeth Seton was the wife of William Magee Seton of the Seton Family Shiping Business. Elizabeth and William had five chilldren before his death from tuberculosis in Leghorn, Italy. The young widow returned to New York and converted to Catholicism. Because of her conversion she was ostracized by New York Society and moved to Baltimore where she founded a school to support herself and her children. It was there that she founded a religious congregation of women (many widows like herself) and moved the group to Emmitsburg, Maryland. Elizabeth Bayley Seton is recognized as the foundress of the Sisters of Chariity in the United States and of Catholic Education.
