Why did queen Mary want England to become catholics?

Charles I did not make England Catholic, regardless of whether you mean Roman Catholic or Anglican Catholic.

There is much controversy over whether Charles I was himself a Catholic. If he was, he was certainly not able to impose the Roman Catholic Church on England (or, if you prefer, return England to the Roman Catholic Church). He was, however, sainted by the Church of England.

Henry was becoming increasingly concerned about the power that the monasteries had in England together with a contempt of their corrupt activities. By then, a lot of mainland Europe had already split from Rome and there was a move to expand the Reformation onto English soil.

The last straw was the refusal of the pope to annul the marriage of Henry to Catherine so that he could marry Anne Boleyn and hopefully sire a male heir to the throne. The result of this refusal was that he split with Rome and declared himself as 'Supreme Governor' of the newly formed Church of England, being excommunicated from Rome as a papal retaliation.

As he was now governor of the Church in England, he dissolved the monasteries and imprisoned any clergy refusing to leave Rome and be part of the new Church.

Yet Henry did not wish to form a protestant denomination in the same vein as the Lutherans or Calvinists on mainland Europe, but remained a Catholic all his life. However, he rejected out of hand any authority of the pope, and in that sense he could be called a 'protest-ant' as he protested against the pope's authority.

After his death the England stayed protestant during the brief reign of his son Edward, but then reverted to Catholicism under Mary who earned the title 'Bloody Mary' because of her reign of bloody terror against protestants. When she died, the throne went to Protestant Elizabeth I and has remained protestant ever since.

Everyone was Catholic including King Charles. It wasn't until the Reformation that there was a Church of England and the English kings were not allowed to marry a Catholic.

Kings and queens married because of the political advantage it gave them. Marriage was more like a treaty than a marriage. It gave the crown lands, money and power.
