God, in what Christians called the Old Testament and Jews call the Law and the Prophets, promised a Messiah who would atone for the sins of Adam and Eve, and of mankind generally, as well as fulfilling a number of other prophecies in those writings. Jesus claimed to be this Messiah (or Christ in Greek, meaning Anointed) and therefore the fulfilment of the law and the prophets.
