In the early years of the LDS church, members of the church were shunned by most communities, seen as Heretics who followed a leader to claimed to have seen God the faith was often thought to be a Cult, there was a pattern of the people establishing a community and then being chased out, largely when the leadership of the church were the ones who owned or were officers in most of the companies in the community. Nauvoo was a prime example of that exact thing. However one of the worst cases was in Missouri where the people were chased repeatedly from their homes, losing everything they owned, forced to endure harsh winter at farwest and the law that was passed literally making it legal to murder a Mormon simply because they were Mormon.
The Mormons were able to settle successfuly at the Great Salt Lake due to their faith, strength, steadfast determination to settle together in a place where they would not be persecuted for their religious beliefs and where the lord wanted them to be.

Hard labour and a communitarian system of irrigation.
It really depends on where your looking. If you look in the right place and have the right equiptment it wouldnt be that hard the hard part is finding the right place/equiptment. There is a place called Sovereign Hill about two hours away from where I live, its an old mining place and i suppose if you looked around there in the right place you could have some luck but then again all the gold has probobly been found by now.
it was hard because it was hard finding the information for the project .
Alot of hard word and innovation! The Mormons had to start completely from scratch in a place with very little water or building materials. They built homes from mud, dug irrigation ditches from the mountains, and ate whatever they could find. They cooperated with the Natives in the area and learned from them the skills that they needed to stay alive.
The difference in climate and in elevation.
