Jesus Christ is right in the middle of world history. Our way of recording the years centres a round his birth.

In the Julian and Gregorian calendar we label years AD or BC. AD denotes years after the birth of Christ and BC denotes years before the birth of Christ. There is no year zero in this scheme, so the year AD 1 immediately follows the year 1 BC.

Jesus was born at a time in history when Greek was widely spoken because Alexander the great had conquered Persia, Judea and some of North Africa. But the Romans had taken control of Judea and were in the process of becoming the dominating Mediterranean power. (around 27BC - 476AD).
