Clearly the standard answer from The Bible and most other historical and literary sources is that God made man in His image. However the wording of the question, and the fact that the author failed to capitalize "god" though it was used as a name, indicates that this person most likely disagrees with this answer and is instead raising a philosophical question. In other words, is God real, or did we make him up? (the questioner is clearly interested in the existence of the monotheistic God of Christianity, Judaism, or Islam, etc..., as the question refers to "god" in the singular and uses a familiar biblical phrase)
It certainly sounds like a reasonable hypothesis to say that humans could have made up a god to suit their needs; Needs for security, purpose, love, immortality. Of course most people throughout history and today, both educated and not so, have concluded that this hypothesis is incorrect. One cannot say this with scientific certainty, but one also cannot support this hypothesis with scientific certainty. In the end this question has been argued in one form or another for most of human history. A wiki answer will hardly be capable of touching on more than a small sliver of the evidence, which would not do justice to the question.
Good luck in your search.
The Bible says God was in existence before man: Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. and man was created in God's image. Genesis 1:26,27 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
A:Genesis 1:26: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness ..." This use of the plural is interesting, because this chapter was written during the Babylonian Exile, when Judaism is generally regarded to have become firmly monotheistic, which should rule out references to the other gods mentioned elsewhere in the Old Testament alongside God. Making man in God's image does not necessarily mean that God was still thought of as anthropomorphic as in earlier times - it is simply saying that in some spiritual way, man is like God. Leon R. Kass (The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis) says that in this, the first creation story, man is made directly in the image of God (1:27), whereas in the second story (Genesis 2:4b-3:24) he is only becomes god-like at the end - "now the man is become like one of us" (3:22) and only in transgression.
God uses figures of speech throughout the bible to call attenention to what is important. If the ground was dry you could say 'the ground is dry' which would be fine. If you wanted to call attention to the sentence you would say 'the ground is thirsty'. This is a figure of speech. An image is representation of something greater (i.e. a picture of the rocky mountains is a represenation of something greater) and is used as a figure of speech. John 4:24 says 'God is spirit'. The 'image' of God is spirit. In the begining God formed man's body out of the dust of the earth. He formed our body because the earth was already created. He made man a soul, which is breath life, because a soul was already created (Gen 1:21). He created them in His image, which is spirit. When the bible says 'God created man and woman in His image' He means He created man and woman to have a spirit, which is the image of God. I encourage you to read Genisis chapter 1 and see for yourself the defitnitions of formed, made, and created.
God created humans in His own image to reflect His character and nature, to have a relationship with Him, and to carry out His purposes on Earth. Being made in God's image gives humans inherent value and dignity.
God said "good" twice on the sixth day of creation when he created animals and then created man and woman. He saw that it was good when he created the animals and again when he created humans in his own image.
God said "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." "…God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Genesis Ch 1)
Creation Today - 2011 Is It Man in the Image of God or God in the Image of Man 1-6 was released on: USA: 2011
Man is the creation of his own image and not the image of any thing or any one else he is his own god
In the Bible, when God said, "Let us make man in our image," he was speaking to the other divine beings in the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We can understand about God the Mother through the Bible. Let us study through the Bible to discover the existence of our God the Mother. Gen. 1:26-27 『Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness..." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.』 The above verse states that God has two images-a male image and a female image. Until now, we have only known and called upon the male image of God: "Father." Then how should we call upon the female image of God? Logically, we should refer to God's female image as "Mother." This is why God had said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness."
Yes, here is a reference for it. "God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." - Genesis 1:27
Ludwig Feuerbach (1804-1872) wrote it in "Essence of Christianity: God the Image of Man. Man's Dependence upon Nature the Last and Only Source of Religion" (1841)""It is not as in the Bible, that God created man in his own image. But, on the contrary, man created God in his own image."The statement plays on a well-known passage from the bible. 'God created man in his own image' Gen. 1:27
God created man in His image by endowing him with qualities such as intelligence, morality, and the capacity for relationships, reflecting God's own nature.
In the Bible, when God said, "Let us make man in our own image," he was speaking to the other divine beings in the heavenly realm. This passage is often interpreted as a reference to the Trinity, where God exists as three persons in one essence.
from God, God created man in his own image

The Scripture says that man was made in the Image of God and the woman (means out of the man) was made in the image of man. Paul in his Epistle verifies this. So if put in a mathematical equation with the = sign meaning 'made in the image of,' we would have: Man = God; Woman = Man; therefore Woman = God. So we both are made in the image of God. A second thing about we humans, both male and female, is that we have the awesome power of 'mind' which lets us know that we know and how we can think of time in all dimensions to learn from and plan ahead for, and have fantastic creative abilities. These are all characteristics of the God 'kind' which is what mankind is made in the image of and not any animal kind, etc. We are unique and given the earth and all upon it to manage - though we haven't done the best of jobs like God would.
