AnswerWe know nothing for certain other than what is in Paul's Epistle to Philemon. However, the epistle was a private letter, and the fact that it was preserved and subsequently copied throughout the Christian community, gives us hope that Philemon did indeed take Onesimus back without sever punishment.

Who is Philemon?

Philemon was a church official, we believe, somewhere in Collossae or the surrounding area. He had a slave called Onesimus who ran away and found himself on Paul's doorstep. The name Onesimus means 'useful'. An absconding slave, in those days, would have been executed if caught. Instead of Paul sheltering the fugitive slave, he sent him back to Philemon with a letter - a letter that can still be read in the New Testament today. In it Paul reminded Philemon that he was owed a favour by Philemon as Paul had been instrumental in his conversion - in fact Paul was so bold as to say that Philemon owed him his very life! He then implored Philemon to take back Oneisimus, who has also now become a Christian, not as a slave, but as a fellow Christian and a brother, as he should put his new Christian principles into action. It seems that Philemon obeyed Paul to the letter. We hear of Onesimus later in another one of Paul's letters, but we are uncertain that he and Onesimus are one and the same. More probably, Onesimus went on to become Bishop at Ephesus as there are early records suggesting that this actually happened.

What books in the Bible did Paul write?

Paul did not write a book or epistle on his first missionary journey. In fact, it appears to have been quite a few years before he first wrote an epistle. In one of his earliest epistles, the Epistle to the Galatians, Paul said that after his conversion, he travelled to Arabia, then Damascus (bypassing Jerusalem), Jerusalem, then Syria and Cilicia, and back to Jerusalem. He must have spent 3 years in Damascus, 14 years in Syria and Cilicia, and indeterminate periods in the other centres, before he even wrote this epistle.

Who did Paul bring back to life in acts?

He brought to life a young man who fell from the window.

How many books of the Bible did Timothy write?

Timothy didn't write any books of the Bible, honey. The letters to Timothy in the New Testament were actually written by the apostle Paul. So, Timothy may have been a great guy, but he's not the one penning those letters.

Who befriended onesimus in Corinth?

In Corinth, Onesimus befriended the Apostle Paul. During his time there, Paul provided spiritual guidance and support to Onesimus, who was a runaway slave from Philemon. Their relationship deepened as Paul shared the message of Christianity with Onesimus, ultimately leading him to embrace the faith. Paul later sent Onesimus back to Philemon, urging him to receive Onesimus not just as a slave but as a beloved brother in Christ.

Is the letter to Philemon one of Pauls epistles?

Philemon is a personal letter to Philemon from Paul. It is pretty strait forward. Onesimus is a slave of Philemon's who has escaped. Onesimus comes to Paul and Paul is able to teach him about Jesus Christ and he become a Christian. In this way Onesimus has become a "child" to Paul. Paul sends this letter back to Philemon with his new brother in the faith, Onesimus, and pleads that Philemon "receive[s] him kindly" the way he would receive Paul himself. He then pleads that the punishment Onesimus was due for running away be brought to Paul instead. This letter does not open itself for interpretation but teaches valuable lesson to followers of Christ; namely the love and unity that fellow believers must have for one another, our relationships should be close and loving as in a family bond (Philemon 2, 20), and when dealing with issues that may arise teaching us to be humble and tactful in our petitions. Instead of using his authority to tell Philemon what to do he appealed to his Christian love.

How did Onesimus get revenge with Archippus at Ephesus?

Onesimus did not seek revenge against Archippus in Ephesus. In fact, Onesimus was a runaway slave who encountered the Apostle Paul while in prison and ultimately became a Christian. Instead of revenge, the narrative focuses on reconciliation, as Paul sends Onesimus back to his master, Philemon, encouraging him to accept Onesimus as a brother in Christ rather than as a slave. The emphasis is on forgiveness and restoration rather than vengeance.

What is the connection between what Paul says in his letter to the Galatians and what he writes to the Philemon?

There doesn't appear to be a particular 'connection' between Philemon and Galatians, however there IS a connection between Philemon and Colossians . Philemon was a Christian, and the employer of a certain slave named Onesimus, who'd abandoned his position and run away to Rome. While in Rome, Onesimus met and listened to the Apostle Paul, changed his attitude and behavior, and become a Christian himself. The 'book' of Philemon is basically a letter to Philemon, a friend of Paul's, asking him to forgive Onesimus, since he had now changed his ways and was no longer rebellious. He was now a fellow Christian (Philemon 1-25). After Onesimus had learned and accepted Christianity, Paul, in order to help the congregation accept him, sent him back to Colossae with Tychicus, to deliver Paul's letter to the Colossian Congregation (Colossians 4:7-9). This letter (the 'book' of Colossians) deals with Christian principles involved in the relationship between master and slave (Colossians 3:22-4:1), which would apply to the employer/employee relationship today.

Explain Philemon Chapter 1 verses 12-13?

Here Paul was in prison, he says that he is sending Onesimus , as he was not of much use then, but he has become better.Additional information:Onesimus was a run-away slave of Christian brother, Philemon, and not a very good person at the time he left. While on the run, however, he met Paul, heard and listened to the truth of God's word, applied what he learned in his life and became a Christian too. Because he now wanted to make things right, he was prepared to return to Philemon's household, so Paul was writing to Philemon, Christian to Christian, to explain what happened, that Onesimus (now a brother) should be forgiven based on Christian love, and saying that Paul would even pay for anything Onesimus owed Philemon.(John 13:35)Because Onesimus was now a Christian, his ethics and behavior were better, and he had become a valuable person, especially to Paul, as he helped to take care of his needs while in prison, that's why he said that he'd like to hold him back.

Why did St. Paul write 21 letters?

A:The apostle Paul may well have written 21 or more letters, but most of these have not survived to the present day. The 13 New Testament epistles attributed to St Paul are Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon. Many scholars now accept only Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Philemon, Galatians, Philippiansand 1 Thessalonians as genuine. A.Q. Morton goes further, having carried out a computer analysis of the epistles attributed to Paul and found that only Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and Philemon contain exactly the same writing style as Galatians. Thus, Paul personally wrote only 5 or 7 of the letters traditionally attributed to him, with the remainder written in his name after his death. Apart from Philemon, Paul's letters were written to cajole and instruct the churches in various matters. Philemon was written to a fellow-Christian on behalf of a slave whom Paul was sending back to his owner.
