Religion played a very large role in the development of society during the times of the New England Colonies. The Puritans were the first people to settle in these colonies and with their understandings of The Bible they were able to form structure, laws, ethics and morals. These believes also brought fear, a fear of the unknown and the fear of deviant behavior towards those in powers. It was this fear that later brought about the Salem Witch Trials and other massacres to the human race including slavery and the movement of Native Americans beyond the Mississippi River.
The southern colonies in the 1600s-1700s were predominantly Anglican due to the influence of the Church of England. However, there was also religious diversity with the presence of other denominations like Baptists, Presbyterians, and Catholics. These colonies were generally more tolerant of religious beliefs compared to the New England colonies.
The religion was assigned by the government also known as a Monarchy. Wrong. The people who settled in the New England colonies came to America for the religious freedom it offered (unlike the southern colonies whose people came to make money). They wanted to purify or reform the church of England, and if not that then to start a new church in New England. These people were known as the Puritans. They believed that the Protestant Reformation began, but was never able to finish in England. They wanted to finish this reformation.
Because they wanted to find the New England Colonies so they can practice their religion freely.
The religion of England was what it always had been for the best part of seventeen centuries. The Church was Anglican and the religion was Catholic. Not Roman Catholic but the religion of the Church of the First Thousand years, before the split between east and west. The religion of the Revelation of Christ, Scripture and the Seven Ecumenical Councils!
hi
Religion is the entire reason the New England colonies exist. The Pilgrims came to New England in search of religious freedom, and they created colonies where people were free to worship as they chose.
Whereas religion was the basis of life and government in the Northern colonies, the lack of religion in the Southern colonies provided the basis for agriculture.
Puritanism.
The most common religion in the New England colonies were christianity.
Many of them were Puritan colonies, actually.
