Religion played a very large role in the development of society during the times of the New England Colonies. The Puritans were the first people to settle in these colonies and with their understandings of The Bible they were able to form structure, laws, ethics and morals. These believes also brought fear, a fear of the unknown and the fear of deviant behavior towards those in powers. It was this fear that later brought about the Salem Witch Trials and other massacres to the human race including slavery and the movement of Native Americans beyond the Mississippi River.
Religion played a significant role in the establishment of the New England colonies, with Puritan beliefs shaping their social and political structures. The Puritans sought to create a religiously pure society, leading to the development of tight-knit communities centered around their faith. Politics in these colonies were often intertwined with religion, as church leaders held significant influence over government decisions, enforcing strict moral codes and shaping policies based on their beliefs.
The religion was assigned by the government also known as a Monarchy. Wrong. The people who settled in the New England colonies came to America for the religious freedom it offered (unlike the southern colonies whose people came to make money). They wanted to purify or reform the church of England, and if not that then to start a new church in New England. These people were known as the Puritans. They believed that the Protestant Reformation began, but was never able to finish in England. They wanted to finish this reformation.
The religion of England was what it always had been for the best part of seventeen centuries. The Church was Anglican and the religion was Catholic. Not Roman Catholic but the religion of the Church of the First Thousand years, before the split between east and west. The religion of the Revelation of Christ, Scripture and the Seven Ecumenical Councils!
Great Britain is a Christian country by name and indeed, the Church of England bishops have seats in the upper house of the British parliament. However, the Church of England plays a very small role in the governing of the country today. In practice, the United Kingdom is a multi-faith society with virtually every religion represented throughout the country. In addition to Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism are widely practised along with many other religions.
Spain hoped to spread Catholicism in its American colonies. The Spanish Crown viewed the spread of Catholicism as a way to unify and control its colonies, as well as to convert indigenous peoples to Christianity. Missionaries, such as the Franciscans and Jesuits, played a key role in spreading Catholicism in the Americas.
