Although most people try to avoid thinking about this conclusion, psychologists have discovered there is one thing that makes us happier than anything else: the feeling of being a little bit better, richer, healthier or more right than the people around us. It's not money that makes us happy, it's the notion of having more money than our neighbours, that's feeding our happiness, etc.

Religion (or, in non-religious countries like many in western Europe, conviction/opinion) plays a big part in our happiness, because we can't all have more money than our neighbors or all be more healthy. But we can all tell ourselves we know "the truth" better than the people around us. That's the psychology behind the many different religions - and the key driver to everybody believing just that small bit different from our parents, friends, church friends and so on. That way we can feel the happiness that belongs to "knowing the truth" just a bit better than the next one.
