Rashi (1040-1105), a French Rabbi by the name of Shlomo Yitzchaki, is best known for his comprehensive commentary on the Talmud and commentary on the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible), the Passover Haggadah, and the midrash Breisheet Rabbah. In particular, his commentary on the Torah and Talmud is still considered one the fundamental basics that Orthodox Jews must learn to understand the Written and Oral Torah.
Rashi also wrote responsa, composed several liturgical piyutim, was a major transmitter of Jewish tradition, and raised up grandsons and disciples who led the Jewish Torah-world in the ensuing generations.
Rashi was a medieval French rabbi and prominent Biblical commentator. He is known for his comprehensive commentary on the Torah, which incorporates explanations of both the plain meaning of the text and interpretations from Jewish tradition. His commentaries remain highly regarded and widely studied in Jewish scholarship.
He wrote the primary Hebrew commentary on the Tanakh and the Talmud.
There are two ways to read the first words of Genesis, and both of them are correct, since each teaches something. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. And the earth was unformed and void (Rashi commentary: "astonishingly empty"), and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters. And God said: 'Let there be light,' and there was light."This states that God created everything, and then gets down to some detail."In the beginning of God's creation of the heavens and the Earth, the Earth was (as yet) unformed and void, with darkness upon the face of the deep and the spirit of God hovering over the face of the waters; and God said 'Let there be light,' and there was light."This translation deliberately points us away from God's initial act of Creation and immediately into the details that follow. One reason for such an approach is given in the Talmud (Hagigah 11b), which advises against examining the initial Creation too closely because of its highly esoteric nature. We understand both readings to be correct because the same leading commentary (Rashi, Gen. 1:1) who suggests the second reading, clearly endorses the first (Rashi, Gen. 1:14) as well, as do other traditional sources (Exodus 20:11, Isaiah 40:28; Maimonides' "Guide," 2:30; Targum and Nachmanides on Gen. 1:1).
One piece of evidence that Abraham loved Ishmael is that he prayed for God's blessing and protection over Ishmael's life. Additionally, Abraham took care of Ishmael, providing for his needs and ensuring his well-being. The Quran also mentions instances where Abraham showed affection and care towards Ishmael.
The Land of Oz is mentioned in the Bible in Job 1:1, where it is described as the home of Job, a wealthy and righteous man who faced great trials. The location of the Land of Oz in the Bible is uncertain, with some scholars suggesting it could have been in the region of Uz in modern-day Jordan.
In the Bible, it is not explicitly stated that God killed the horses of the Egyptians during the plagues. However, it is believed that the Egyptians may have used other means of transportation or animals to pursue the Israelites, such as chariots pulled by other animals or on foot.
According to Aztec legend, the city of Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) was built with two human sacrifices. The Aztecs believed that sacrificing humans to the gods was necessary to ensure the success and longevity of the city.
