Oil is commonly used in The Bible to "anoint" those whom God has ordained. I think the word you are looking for is "anoint." In the Old Testament this was used most often for kings, high priests, and prophets. They used a specific type of oil mixture that can be found in Exodus. After Christ, many others who were not kings, high priests, or prophets were anointed . Now because of Christ anyone who has been reborn and therefore considered a son or a daughter of God can be anointed with oil, or any other liquid for that matter.

In some religious or cultural traditions, oil is used to anoint a person who has been chosen or blessed for a special or sacred purpose. Anointing with oil symbolizes a consecration or setting apart of the person for that particular role or task. It is considered a ritual that signifies empowerment, blessing, or protection.

Why do you put oil on a person who has been chosen in the Catholic religion?

First, there is no such thing as the 'Catholic religion'. The religion is Christianity, and Catholics are merely one denomination out of many in the Christian religion.Throughout Christianity, and even before, pouring oil on a head is known as anointing. This practice was an ancient Jewish practice symbolising that the anointed person was chosen by God for a particular calling. The most famous person to be anointed in this way was, of course, King David, who wrote about it in Psalm 23.In the UK when a new monarch is crowned, the archbishop anoints him or her in the same way, to show that the monarch has been chosen by God to serve the people of the country as king or queen. In the baptism service, the person baptised, as well as being ceremonially 'washed' with water, also hasd the sign of the cross placed on his/her forehead. Sometimes the priest will use oil for this purpose as this anointing symbolises the person's acceptance (being chosen) into the Christian Church worldwide.
