The Habiru or Hapiru are a group of people or tribe mentioned in the El-amarna letters. These letters were written to the Pharaoh of Egypt around the time of the Israelite invasion of Canaan and repeatedly asked for military assistance. The repetition of the request and the total absence of any record of a reply, as well as no evidence of any Egyptian incursion into the relevant part of Canaan in this time is strong evidence that the Habiru were in fact the Hebrew invaders.

The reluctance of the Egyptians to attack the Israelites, given the recent debacle with the plagues and the loss of an army is understandable. In addition they would have been militarily weak as a result, not to mention a reluctance to meddle with Israel and their almighty God. It is also significant to note that the military campaigns into Canaan by the Egyptians during the relevant period avoided the areas where The Bible record states the Israelites had settled.

The Habiru are thus identified by many scholars with the Israelite invaders, as recorded in the Old Testament. This is regarded as another archaeological confirmation of the Old Testament record of history.

Other scholars who deny this connection are committed to the late date for the Exodus, which means that the Hebrews came into Palestine later and so could not be the Habiru here referred to. However, the much greater weight of evidence regarding the date of the conquest points to an earlier date which would then mean that the Habiru are indeed the Israelites.

The Habiru were a group of people mentioned in ancient Near Eastern texts, including some in the Old Testament. They were likely nomadic people or social outcasts. The term "Habiru" is associated with workers, rebels, or refugees. Their presence in the Old Testament sheds light on the social and historical context of the biblical narratives.

What are the disadvantages of only reading the Old Testament?

This question can be understood in terms of reading only the Old Testament but not the New Testament, or in terms of reading only the Old Testament but nothing else that could contradict or challenge the stories and traditions portrayed in the Old Testament. For a Jew, there is no particular disadvantage in reading the Old Testament but not the New Testament, as the New Testament is not relevant to his religion. For a Christian, the disadvantage is that the books most important to his faith are in the New Testament. Anyone reading only the Old Testament and not what is now known about the history of the times and biblical scholarship on the Old Testament, the disadvantage is that the reader must take everything literally and can not have an informed view as to how literally the Old Testament should be read.
