Simeon was the man who was allowed to see the Messiah before he (Simeon) died. (Luke 2:25-33)
In the Bible, Simeon was the man in the temple who recognized Jesus as the Messiah when he was presented by Mary and Joseph at the temple in Jerusalem. Simeon had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Messiah, and he blessed Jesus and proclaimed him as the Savior.
The first evangelist for the crucified Messiah was likely Mary Magdalene, who was one of the women reported in the Bible to have been the first to witness Jesus' resurrection and proclaim his message. She shared with the disciples that she had seen the risen Christ, which played a pivotal role in spreading the early Christian message.
I assume Mary found favor with God in at least two ways. One being her lifestyle. She apparently lived honestly and according to the scriptures and the law. The other being her family line. Prophesy foretold from which lineage the Messiah would come. You can read about this in the gospels (not John). We often read in scripture about the sovereignty of God. We don't always understand the mind of God and how He acts with reference to the affairs of men but we do read in scripture that God often chooses certain people for certain roles. I am certain God chose Mary way, way before she ever lived. God intended for the Messiah to come from her family line and He knew when and where He would cause Messiah to come into the world. There may be other ways in which Mary found favor with God, but this is what I understand.
Simeon and Anna waited to meet the Messiah at the temple in Jerusalem. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to present Him to the Lord, Simeon and Anna were both there and recognized Him as the fulfillment of God's promise.
