The American crocodile is listed as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN. In the U.S., it has never been very common in the Florida mangrove swamps where it resides with an estimated population there of 500 or less. The species is found also in Cuba and Central America.
There are around 800 American crocodiles in the swamps of south Florida along the mangrove coast.
