For the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) the AVERAGE for an adult male is around 4 meters (13 feet) with the largest individual ever accurately measured at around 18 feet (5.5 meters.) The are stories of 20-23 foot individuals but these have not been verified. The largest American crocodiles alive today occur in the Tarcoles River of Costa Rica. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), on the other hand, is much smaller on average. The average size of an adult male American alligator is around 10 feet (3 meters) although the largest ever accurately measured was around 14.5 feet (just under 4.5 meters.) There is one story of a 19 foot (nearly 6 meters) American alligator but this is purely fantasy and is literally impossible for this species (a 19 foot alligator is as ridiculous as a 30 foot saltwater crocodile.)
