People drink a lot on New Year's Eve. One of the best Hangover preventers is believed to be eating good amounts of carbs (like potatoes) or fried food BEFORE you start drinking (eating it the morning after, like some people believe is usually a very bad idea)

Chinese is as fried as you can get and very easy to buy (Chinese food take-out is everywhere in MA, and I think the Chinese food New Year tradition is mostly around New England). Also with the food being mostly appetizers, a Pupu platter can be picked at all night, and won't sit heavy in your stomach, like a burger.

This is my best guess as to why it's popular. :) I'm not sure if there is a story behind it or no

Most restaurants are closed on New Years, but the Chinese celebrate their new year at a different time. I'm guessing people order from there because there isn't another restaurant open at that time.
