When choosing a good Mexican restaurant, there are many things to consider:

First and foremost, do they offer free chips and salsa? Chips and salsa are not just an appetizer; they are a pinnacle part of the meal. Would American restaurant require you to order bread and butter as an appetizer? If they require you to order guacamole or spinach-cheese dip, that’s fine. But chips and salsa is a standard.

Secondly, does the restaurant offer both refried beans and black beans? This seems like a small issue, but it isn’t. Any Mexican restaurant can make a burrito delicious with refried beans. Refried beans in Mexican food is like pepperoni in Pizza kitchens. But if the restaurant can make burritos with black beans and still have enough patrons order it to keep it on the menu, they must be doing something right.

Third, where are the cooks / is the owner from? Believe it or not, there are some Mexican restaurants that are owned and operated by people of non-Mexican origin. Not to say that a white person couldn’t make a good chicken soft taco, but it’s certainly something to consider. Even if the restaurant is run and the food prepared by Mexican staff, it’s also prudent to know where in Mexico they are from. For instance, cooks from Acapulco will make Fajitas differently than cooks from Tijuana. Discover where your preferences lie (southern Mexican food is amazing in this humble writer’s opinion).

Finally, are the menus in English and Spanish? If you want good French food, you’d go to a restaurant with French on the menu. The same applies to Mexican food. If it’s not in Spanish, who exactly is this restaurant catering to? No one would know better if the food is authentic and good than a Mexican themselves. Now, keep in mind that this isn’t suggesting that all Mexicans speak or read only Spanish. However, the food being ordered was invented and named in Spanish, originally. If the restaurant is authentic and of good taste, its every aspect will be one of invitation to those who would know and enjoy that dish the best. Thus, having a bilingual menu shows confidence in the food for both English speakers and Mexicans alike.

Eating at Mexican restaurants with one or more of these traits is preferable, but finding a restaurant with all of these qualities is perfection!
