Hi
There are basically three type of UPS'
1. The Standby UPS (often called off-line UPS): this type simply passes on the power it receives from the mains directly to your device during normal operations, in the event of a blackout it transfers to battery supply for your equipment. But there is a millisecond interruption between the switch-over to battery.
2. There is also the Line interactive (often wrongly called Inline UPS): this is basically a UPS with a voltage regulater/stabillizer built in. it attempts to correct the incomming voltage from the mains through it to your equipment. it also switches to battery power when there is blackout.
3. Finally there is the Online UPS: this type gives only the fully corrected power from the charged batterries to the equipment. it only uses the power to from the mains to charge the barerries, there is no break in power during a blackout. This type of UPS is often regarded as the best, since it offers the best protection to sensitive equipments.
hope this helps

Protects against potential electrical power problems by supplying a consistent level of electrical power to a computer. The battery is constantly recharging while the UPS is in use.
Online ups protect their computer equipment against electrical power browns outs and blackouts by using multiple power generators that have a back up system.

The inline functions is an optimization technique that is used by the compilers. The disadvantage of the inline functions is the increased binary size.
