By dictionary standards, no they're not. Gay is used in regards to males who are attracted physically and emotionally to other males, while lesbian is used for females. However, a lot of people will have the tendency to call a lesbian "gay", instead of lesbian. I'm not sure why, but it seems to be the most common thing these days.
