Yes and no. In Islam, Zakat (performing charitable acts, helping the poor) is one of the Five Pillars and is required of any Muslim. But while it is certainly commendable to give charity and help the poor, poverty is a global problem and it has a multitude of causes. Of course, performing Zakat can help some poor people; but in a country afflicted with large numbers of poor people, it often takes a bigger strategy, which includes changes in government policy, better education for both boys and girls, and improvements in the economy, to truly reduce poverty.
