The KKK originally started after the civil war to scare the newly freed slaves from expressing their civil rights. They dressed in white sheets to intimidate African Americans to think they were ghosts of civil war dead. They killed people, hung them, beat them, and did things to keep African Americans intimidated. Many of the men involved were also the leading men of the area and part of the police department. They were so powerful in the 1920's they had a march down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC and they ran a man for president. They are a white supremacist organization that still exists and is still not for equal rights.

The KKK has historically been associated with conservative, reactionary ideologies that sought to preserve racial segregation and oppose civil rights advancements.
