Nowadays, if you find yourself homeless in the U.S., youj'd call 211 on any payphone, and the operator will direct you to the nearest facilities available to help whatever situation you might be in. (theoretically) Shelters, food pantries, medical aid, government assistance offices, etc., would be the types of information the operator can relay, right there on any phone (ie. a pay phone if you had no cell)
