Two. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Deputy Ronald Ludlow died August 13, 1965 while trying to prevent the looting of a liquor store. Two days later, Long Beach PD Officer Richard LeFebvre was killed while responding to a civil disturbance call on what is now called Martin Luther King Blvd. in Long Beach.

Both officers were killed with police firearms. In Ludlow's case, a deputy lost control of a shotgun, and the suspect who grabbed it shot Ludlow. LeFebvre was killed by a stay bullet from another officer's sidearm.
