I have seen pictures of drum skimmers being used in the Gulf of Mexico. Also, belt skimmers apparently are being used. The idea is the same. To get the oil off the surface of the water, the oil must come into contact with an absorbant material, then the oil must be squeezed out. BP is employing as many as 400 vessels of opportunity to do the skimming. Many are fisherman who can use the money.

Why don't they skim the spilled oil off the ocean waters in the Gulf?

Oil is being skimmed off the ocean waters. The primary reason for not having more wide-spread skimming is the cost of ships. For example, tankers would be able to skim oil off the surface of the water, but the cost of using such tankers is quite expensive, and BP does not seem willing to pay this cost.

What would you use to separate oil and water?

How are things going at the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?

Terrible. Hurricane season is coming, and while a big ship was sent in to try and skim the oil off the surface of the water, massive amounts are still coming out of the hole in the ground and there is a giant underwater oil slick that the surface ships can't get to. This will Probably go down in history as the Worst Human caused Environmental disaster in History (along with Chernobyl's nuclear plant accident).
