Malcolm X
Malcolm X was a minister and a civil rights leader. He believed everyone should be treated the same. He was a prominent figure in the Nation of Islam.
Malcolm X rose up as an important "new voice" for African Americans. He was a leader in the Nation of Islam, usually known as the Black Muslims. Malcolm X's philosophy was that Black people should try to become economically independent of the White power structure with black businesses and things of that nature. -liz
Talmadge Hayer, now known as Thomas Hagan, admitted to gunning down the civil rights leader Malcolm X, out of anger over Malcolm X's split with the leadership of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X had spoken out against its leader, Elijah Muhammad, which Hayer at the time felt was slanderous.

While in prison he was sent a letter from his brother that told him abstaining from drugs and alcohol would get him out of prison; thinking this was some sort of hustle Malcolm complied. His brother then visited him and taught him about the Nation of Islam, and family members began sending him letters about the group too. Malcolm later began corresponding with the then leader and self proclaimed prophet of the Nation of Islam. While in prison Malcolm began to accept the teachings of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X later renounced the Nation of Islam and converted to orthodox Islam.
