... the Democratic National Convention. The city of Chicago was inundated with "hippies" who were politically active young adults of the time. They were resistant to laws, police, and the status quo. The "hippies" had unconventional ways of expressing their opinions, primarily in support of Senator McCarthy. For example, to express their opposition to Chicago Police, the hippies would drop baggies of feces from hotel windows on to officers below. When Senator McCarthy appeared in Grant Park to speak to his supporters, however, he was surrounded by a protective detail of Chicago Police officers (in plan clothes). When the convention activities eventually got out of hand, Mayor Richard J. Daley gave his famous order to the police, "shoot to kill."
Five days of race riots erupted in Washington, D.C. following the April 4, 1968 assassination of Civil Rights Movement-leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil unrest affected at least 110 U.S. cities; Washington, along with Chicago and Baltimore, were among the most affected.
Did not materialize or were not categorized as riots ( I can recall a Dragnet coverage of anti-riot precautions taken by LAPD in response to the King assasination. No riot erupted in L.A. at this time, fingers were, no pun intended, crossed. ( My dad never used this phrase as he thought it was making fun of the Praying Hands!)

Socialism
Many things happened in 1968. In April MLK was killed, in June Robert Kennedy was killed, the democratic convention had riots, the largest draft for the Vietnam war took place, it was the summer of love, and riots took place in many cities.
MLK was shot that day. In June of 1968 Bobby Kennedy was also killed while running for president. That summer it seemed as if we had lost two of our greatest men and the world was on fire with Vietnam, riots, and demonstrations at the Democratic convention.
The riots in Chicago were in 1968, not 1967. You could try the Chicago Historical Society and the Chicago Tribune (see links).
