What do homelessness people feel?

As all human believe. They should offer help, support, and charity to relieve those people and to cover their needs.

Homelessness is almost never a money issue, it is a mental state where the individual refuses to follow normal aspects of day to day life. Of course, you can never really know what someone else is thinking unless you ask them, so my first answer is that you should strike up a conversation with a person you think may be homeless and find out.

I feel like this is not necessarily true and incredibly negative. While some people who are homeless worry about their survival, many more may feel fine with their level of shelter. Punished by someone? God? I feel like this is all very personal.

Actually, according to the National Law Center on Poverty and Homelessness:

"Some people may think that homelessness is due to psychological or moral impairment- essentially that factors of an individual's personality or life choices are the largest reasons for homelessness. The research has shown this view to be incorrect. Educating people about this reality may make them less willing to judge and more willing to help their homeless neighbors"

The report also shows that only one third of homeless individuals suffer from chronic substance abuse (which is medically considered an illness) and only one quarter suffer from sever mental illness. As far as choices go, the report also states:

"Exorbitant housing costs present a large financial barrier to many people in the U.S., especially low-income individuals. Findings from the National Low Income Housing Coalition show that there is no state in the U.S. where an individual working full-time at minimum wage can afford an average two-bedroom apartment at Fair Market Rent. Additionally, in 2009, adequate affordable housing units were only available to 32 percent of extremely low-income (ELI)renters, and high-income renters occupy 42 percent of all affordable housing units for ELI renters."

What this means is that housing in this country is too expensive and the working poor have a hard time maintaining shelter because of that. The working poor often become homeless after major financial issues such as a layoff or a medical problem.

You cannot say that all homeless individuals are in the position they are in purely through bad choices on their part because it simply is not true. By placing the blame on the victims we allow society to ignore them and not solve the problems the poor face in our country.

We need to extend community outreach to the homeless and offer programs that house and offer job training to those who want and need the help. We do need to provide more treatment for those with sever mental illness and addiction problems, but you shouldn't force American citizens to do anything (unless they are a danger to themselves or others) just because you don't wan them around and have a complete lack of education as to who these people are and what they need.

Maybe some people do suffer from a "mental state" where "they refuse to follow normal aspects of everyday life," whatever that means, but America is a country of freedom and liberty and I, for example, have every right not to follow social norms as long as I don't infringe on the liberties of others. Conventional norms don't "allow" people to be productive, people are productive despite social norms.

Some people may choose a traveling, poor life because it does give them a sense of unusual freedom, and maybe they like being free of the standards and demands of a society that sucks more and more every day for the working poor and the middle class.

It depends on the individual. Some feel pity for the homeless because they think that person may have got a bad break in life. Some feel anger or disgust at them because they think that person should pull themselves up and not wallow in self pity. These are just two but I'm sure there are many ways we think of the homeless. Regardless, they need help.

People tend to see them as drug addicts, alcoholics, and former inmates. However, not all of them are! People also often see them as disgusting, dirty, and lazy. However, those who stay in shelters are made to keep up their hygiene, and shelters have policies that encourage them to go and look for work. Not all are lazy, since some were hard workers before disaster hit them.

Homeless people are just people like everybody else. People, that for a variety of reasons, are in financial crisis. Once homeless it is hard to break the cycle. They need compassion and a little help in a way that they can keep their human dignity.
