They came from Europe. In other words they came from english speaking countries. Especially white countries.

Prior to the US Civil War, the majority of the Colonies and later the USA, immigrants came from the Netherlands, Britain, Ireland, Germany and especially a number of German Jews who wanted to escape from the oppression of petty German princes. France also was represented in the USA and of course Canada. And certainly a few years after the war, Chinese people. By the late 1850's there were almost 2 million Irish born immigrants in the USA.
