the north had many more towns which were based on manufacturing. The south was primarily an agrarian (farming) society. Many immigrants were poor. It costs money to become a farmer -- to buy land, animals, hire help etc. It was easier for them to go to northern cities and get jobs which didn't need money to get. Also many manufacturers would hire immigrants because they were willing to work for less money.
