Why did people create cities and a civilization?

Urbanisation happended in the 1900s onwards in MEDCs like the USA and UK. It started with the Industrial Revolution, where factories attracted a lot of workers to move nearby. These workers required houses and services (schoold, doctors, shops) and so urban settlements began to grow. As people became wealthier adn more mobile they started to move to the suburbs (suburbanisation) and eventually to the rural urban fringe (counter urbanisation).

However, urbanisation is still occurring in LEDCs like Brazil and India. This is due to massive rural to urban migration, where people move to the cities to escape the serious rural poverty that exists in countryside areas. This has lead to a huge increase in urban populations in LEDCs and has lead to the development of shanty towns in such areas.

According to Jered Diamond in his recent book Guns, Germs and Steel, cities developed when agriculture made it possible for people to grow more food than they needed for themselves. Then, it was possible for some people to stop growing or catching food and start specializing in other things (mostly crafts). The people who did that would gravitate towards where the most people were, so they would have the best chance of trading their crafts for food. And so the places with the most people attracted the most people, and became cities. We can see that happening around the world today, as the biggest cities (generally) keep getting bigger, while rural areas and even small cities are generally losing population.

Even dating back to thousands of years ago A city centre has always been viewed as the core of a city economy because its a place where people meet to exchange not only goods and services, but also ideas. That traditional role of a city centre has been somewhat eroded in recent years. Many people live and work in the City so its only national that business would want to establish themselves there. I think you may have it a little backwards. Cities came about because the people were there, first. People grouped together for safety from animals, marauders, and the elements. They almost always grouped together near a water source, since water is so important for drinking, cleaning, washing, and moving body wastes away.

At some point, a group of people expanded because of having more offspring, then people outside the group saw that it was good being in a group, and joined in. Pretty soon, there was a village, then a town, then much later, a city. These days, people live in cities because of a couple of things: They were born there, there were so many more goods, services, and entertainment, and there were many more opportunities for a social life.

In cities, there were many, many more potential mates available, and this much reduced the chances for in-breeding, which can result in an increase of birth defects, both physical and mental/emotional.

When people began to grow crops and domesticate animals they lived together in groups. Soon because they were better fed and they could protect each other they began to form government and religion. As soon as there was time to do other things than hunt for food they could also create art, build buildings, and create a society. Soon they were trading with others and exchanging ideas, art, food, and legends. Civilizations began to form. With civilization came kingdoms, governments, and wars that invaded and conquered others.
